Note from our Chinese painting teacher

Hello everybody! I’m Lucia lao shi! I come from Nanjing, China, and I am currently working as a MYP& IGCSE Chinese and Chinese painting teacher in an international school at Nanjing. I have a master’s degree, majoring in Educational Leadership and degree in Primary Education. I have also obtained the National Teacher qualification Certificate. I have worked in the field of international school education for 14 years, and I have also worked in public and private schools in China for 5 years.

Chinese ink painting is one of my biggest passions. Xu Bei Hong is an artist who has inspired me as a teacher and artist. I am an approachable teacher and my classroom atmosphere is fun and relaxing. I can’t wait to share my knowledge and meet all of you in class!

Materials required

For the best painting experience and optimal learning, please ensure that you have the following materials prepared/purchased before the commencement of class. The materials can be purchased via Aliexpress, Taobao, Amazon etc at affordable prices. Please note that the material brands are just our recommendation. Any other brands are acceptable too. We understand that some of you may not be able to find the exact specifications of the materials. Please try your best and make do with what you are able to get.

1. Chinese brushes :

Brush head length 2cm (Weasel hair) X 1

Brush head length 5cm (Goat hair) X 1

Brush head length 2.5- 3cm (Goat hair) X 4

2. Chinese Calligraphy Ink

3. Chinese Paint (Recommended Set: Marie’s brand, set of 12 colours)

4. Chinese Rice Paper (30cm X 40 cm) (We will need 1 sheet per lesson but it is better to buy more just in case)

5. A4 white paper (We will need 1 sheet per lesson but it is better to prepare more just in case)

6. Mat or newspaper to line the table

7. Water pot (to wash brushes)

8. Palette

9. Paper to test the ink (Kitchen roll or rice paper)

Capacity

Our online Zoom live Chinese painting course has a capacity of 9 children. Family members sharing the same screen are welcome to join the class for free. You can also choose to sign up for just our recorded zoom lessons at a discount. All paintings will be reviewed by the teacher during the next live zoom class if you submit it within a week of the lesson.

Duration

The duration of our online Chinese painting sessions are 45 minutes long.

Schedule

Mandarin Tree operates 4 terms of 13 weeks during the year. Within each term, there will be 10 lessons scheduled. For details of the term calendar click here.

Mode of lesson delivery

Sessions take place on Zoom. Before the commencement of our online Chinese painting class, you will be sent a zoom link and password which will be used for all 10 sessions.

For extra security, a password is required to enter the meeting room and everyone will be admitted into a virtual waiting room before being allowed in manually.

The lesson will be recorded and the recording will be made available to all students.
